On March 24, 2015, four members of the middle school class from the Montessori School of Ojai set out on an epic journey to New York City. Our purpose was to represent the Republic of Nicaragua at the Montessori Model United Nations conference and to have a lot of fun doing it!
New York can be an overwhelming city to visit when you are coming from a small town, but we were ready for the challenge. We rode the subway, strolled through Times Square on Saturday (Saturday!!!), visited the United Nations twice, went to the Top of the Rock, and even had tropical drinks in a room made completely of ice.
The conference itself was held in a midtown hotel. We spent two days in our committees, debating and revising our resolutions to present to the whole conference. In the evenings, we spent time getting to know Montessori students from all over the world at conference social events. On the third day, we all went to the General Assembly room at the United Nations and voted.
With the conference finished, we had more time to explore the City that Never Sleeps. We ate at famous delis, shopped to our hearts content at FAO Schwarz and Toys R Us. We saw an amazing Broadway Show, Finding Neverland. We went to see the animals at Central Park Zoo and ate bagels filled with “schmear”. We watched street performers and toured Harlem, attending a Gospel church service and learning about Civil Rights.
All and all, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will cherish forever. It was an opportunity not to be missed!
